Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
The United Nations, successor to the failed League of Nations, was chartered at the close of the Second World War, on June 26, 1945. It succeeded in correcting the fatal flaws of its predecessor and has worked since its inception to promote peace and security and foster economic and social development and the advancement of human rights around the world. The United Nations is limited only in that it cannot interfere within the boundaries of a country out of respect for the sovereignty of its member nations. The governance of the United Nations is conducted by six internal organizations: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Secretariat, the Economic and Social Council, and the Trusteeship Council (which has no current role), all based in New York, as well as the International Court of Justice located in The Hague, Netherlands. Each has a distinct method of governance and mission. Together, they help countries divided by politics, religion, or culture to become more unified. The book's information is accompanied by detailed paragraphs set apart against variously colored backgrounds. The book also includes side bars labeled "… ON THE SCENE …" and "WHAT DO YOU THINK?" Photographic illustrations and reproductions of paintings and other graphics support and add interest to the text. This book is part of the "Global Organizations" series written to provide points-of-view that inspire debate about the success of each organization and help in the evaluation of the organization's actions. It concludes with a glossary, suggestions for further reading, a list of web sites, and an index. It would be a good addition to classes that teach social and current events, in debate classes, and as a resource for AP classes. Reviewer: Hazel Buys
