Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
One of four titles in the Garland series on U.S. military affairs ( United States Intelligence: An Encyclopedia, LJ 7/90; United States Army: A Dictionary, LJ 1/91; a volume on the Air Force is due out this month), this work is not a historical dictionary of naval terminology but a dictionary of ``the Post-World War Two period with emphasis on the present.'' Truly prodigious in scope and coverage, with entries arranged alphabetically, this provides definitions ranging in length from one sentence to one page or more. Each entry has references appended indicating the sources of information used for the definition. Cross referencing is used to move the reader throughout the dictionary. Yet the immensity of this work mitigates against both its use and purchase. Specifically, the length could have been drastically shortened by eliminating the references after each entry. This feature makes for redundancy, length, and expense. References could have been cited once in a list of sources at the end. The cross referencing is cumbersome, since many entries are referred to six broad categories and numerous broad subjects. Academic libraries may want to consider, but public libraries should stick with more reasonably priced books, such as John Noel and Edward L. Beach's Naval Terms Dictionary (Naval Inst. Pr., 1988. 5th ed.), which costs $21.95. Libraries that already own Noel and Beach's Naval Terms Dictionary or Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Related Terms (GPO, 1986. o.p.) can skip United States Navy: A Dictionary .-- Harold N. Boyer, Marple P.L., Broomall, Pa.
Booknews
A serious, scholarly reference for the serious researcher of the US Navy, discussing the major terms currently in use. Its scope is the post-World War II period, with an emphasis on the present. The entries are listed alphabetically with extensive cross-referencing. A comprehensive list of acronyms is included, as well as a list of acronyms for the major ship types. The bibliography contains a complete listings of the sources and references used. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
