Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“Lubar kicks off his six-book series of kids-as-monsters tales with an uncomplicated meditation of good vs. evil that riffs on Jekyll and Hyde…. Fans of Lubar’s Nathan Abercrombie zombie series will find much to like here.”
Kirkus Reviews on Hyde and Shriek

“Whoever thinks the short story is dead, or that kids don’t like short stories, hasn’t talked to any real live kids and hasn’t read the latest in this popular series.”
—School Library Journal on Attack of the Vampire Weenies

Children's Literature - Myrna Dee Marler
When Angie tries to help an old woman sitting on a bus bench who looks like she is ill, she ends up transformed into a witch, with powers she cannot quite control. For example, she keeps turning her brother into strange objects by accident, then she has to figure out how to change him back. In the meantime, two women seem to be pursuing her for the purpose of stealing her power. Angie can only confide in her best friend Jan while she tries to learn to use her powers, elude those chasing her, and navigate the social pitfalls at school. Lubar manages to make this book, one in a series about strange and supernatural goings on in Lewinton (much like Stephen King's Castle Rock), both funny and frightening at the same time. This is a good read for reluctant readers as well as those who like shivers along with their giggles. Reviewer: Myrna Dee Marler
