Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
04/15/2014
In association with the Royal Horticultural Society, British garden designer and HGTV personality James (The City Garden Bible) briefly explains the importance of urban greening before encouraging readers who have even the smallest spaces to plant in them and enjoy the area even more. The author's enthusiastic claim that one can transform any location in such a way is supported by 13 case studies illustrating good design principles so crucial for urban sites. James addresses age-old problems such as narrow passages and dreary basement-level spots, but also discusses recent trends including vertical gardening and gravel gardens. The book is written with Americans in mind; plant recommendations and step-by-step instructions for 16 projects are appropriate for gardeners in the United States. James offers a balance of inspirational and practical ideas (even for those without much money, time, or inclination to garden). Detailed and well indexed, this work's numerous photos and sidebars make it attractive and somewhat easier to use and to browse than Steven Orr's Tomorrow's Garden. VERDICT Whether aiming for a family-friendly garden, sophisticated solitude, or something in between, urban and suburban dwellers should read this book for smart, sustainable ideas for their outdoor spaces.—Bonnie Poquette, Milwaukee
