Children's Literature
While this one volume encyclopedia indicates that it is Internet-linked, it can be used without ever going to the Internet. If you do have a computer all of the references take you to the Usborne site and then you navigate from there. The book opens with an overview of the world we inhabit and it covers many of the topics found in The Kingfisher Geography Encyclopedia but in less detail and simpler language. Young readers will gain an understanding of our world, its people, general science and what man has created. In the first major section entitled "Our World" some of the topics addressed are what causes weather, day and night, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, the various biomes and their inhabitants. Other sections of the encyclopedia focus on "How People Live," "How Things Work." and "How Your Body Works." Each page is liberally illustrated and the text is straightforward and not extensive. It really serves to introduce the subject and encourage kids to either go find out more in other books or to go on-line and find out more. The closing pages include maps of the word, which show countries, environments and some facts about each of the continents. There is also a section that shows the word's flags arranged by continent and some interesting facts such as the largest lakes, highest mountains, largest islands, animal and plant records. A useful feature is the map index which presents the country name in bold type and the capital city following plus a page reference. The is a multipage index which will also help kids locate facts quickly. 2003, Usborne/EDC, Ages 8 to 12.
