Utah's the Used sound like a lot of different bands on their self-titled debut album. The sequencing of the disc seems intended to give the early impression that they are a metal band, but as the album goes on the music softens to hard rock and even ballads backed by strings. Similarly, lead singer Bert McCracken starts out howling, but by the third track, "Bulimic," he is affecting a Perry Farrell-like hoarse delivery, and later on he even sings in a nearly normal voice. Sometimes, as in the seventh track, "A Box Full of Sharp Objects," he alternates approaches between verses and chorus. The musical development mirrors the lyrics, in which McCracken begins with typical expressions of youthful frustration, culminating in the fifth track, "Poetic Tragedy," written in the third person, which depicts a suicide, but then begins to find satisfaction in romantic attachment to the point on the album's final credited track, "Pieces Mended" there is also a hidden track long after the end, that he is proposing marriage. Along the way, he drops the "F" word casually numerous times, but the album does not contain a parental advisory sticker. So, The Used has a definite progression, musically and lyrically. But it is also all over the map in terms of musical approach. Some of it could be played on MTV beside Creed and Vertical Horizon, some of it recalls the rage of Fuel, and some goes even further into forbidding metal. That range should give Reprise Records, the band's label, plenty to work with, but it may confuse potential fans.

Still a favorite and still amazing

The Used is now world famous and their self-titles debut album started it all. At the time of it's release there was no other band like The Used, no one had heard any thing like them. Genius guitarist Quinn Allman's already amazing guitar riffs are brought screaming to life by the amazing Bert McCracken, who's lyrics are about something real for a change. Jeph Howard (bass) and Brandon Steineckert (drums) complete the sound. Four styles that shouldn't work together blend perfectly. While songs such as Taste of Ink, Buried Myself Alive, Blue and Yellow, and Box of Sharp Objects caught the world's attention, tracks like Bulimic and Greener With Scenery make people fans for life. Over four years since it's release, this album is still frequently in my cd player. I'll never get sick of it. One listen and you are hooked. In short, The Used's debut album is amazing and ground breaking. The Used started a new music revolution. You will love it and you will want more.

The Used Are The Best Band In The World!

The Used is my all time favorite band. Their first cd is by far the best its more raw and edgy. I love how Bert just screams. They define the term screamo. "Poetic Tradegy" is the best song on the album its so real and sad. All the songs are good I really enjoyed the hidden track "Choke Me". If you like The Used this is the cd to get.

    One word: "Whoa!"

Already having their "In Love and Death" CD, I decided to get their first one. And let me tell you: The Used's first CD is their best one!!!! The music is loud, upbeat, and pounding: The guitars have riffs of their own, the drumming is everywhere, and the singing is awesome!!! The singer screams through most of the songs and he sings nicely, too. If you are new to The Used, I would recommend this CD first before their latest one. So, if you like The Used already, enjoy rock music, or have an open-mind in general when it comes to genres of music, then listen to the samples. If you like what you hear, then BUY THE CD: YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!! (I sure wasn't.)

    Its Our Time To Shine

The Used. This is deffinitally my favorite CD I own. I can't get enough of it. I heard On My Own then found myself buying the CD within hours. Every song has great lyrics/meaningful lyrics. Bert McCracken (lead singer) has one of the best voices I've heard in punk rock. He can scream in songs, and sing so sweet in others. Every song on the CD is pretty much equally good. This CD has a little bit of everything on it... little hard core, punk and a little piano. I think every rocker should have this CD in their collection and I can't wait 'till there second CD comes out!!!

    THE USED ARE AWESOME!!!

I Love The Used's self-titled debut album because it cheers me up when I am sad and it helps me get my anger out when I scream with Bert to "A Box Full Of Sharp Objects". I think the best song on The Used's album has to be either "Blue And Yellow" or "Poetic Tragedy". "The taste of ink" is AWESOME too. As a matter of fact, THEY ALL ARE AWESOME!!!

    Poetic verse and harmonic music

The Used have made a combination of incredible poetic lyrics, a trait extremely rare among modern popular music, and a new mix of harmony in their actual musical notes. I got hooked, and ached for the music more and more. I wouldn't settle for any less in music than this.

    Speachless

The Used. There's nothing you can verbally say about this album. It rocks,it rolls, and everything in between. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be blown away. he lyrics are incredibly powerful, and the melody is up to, if not surpassing them. A clear-cut, genuine sucess.

    USED

This album is awsome. It's really heavy and deep they manage to scream with melody... how many people can do that now? It's a very powerful album and they are great guys. Everyone support them and buy it.

    Different but nonetheless awesome

Not only are they very cool guys, their jams are good as well. It's really heavy yet still melodic, and Bert sings with an intensity that makes us think that he's constantly on the verge of vomiting. So we highly recommend you checking out their new album that just came out called The Used. They are on Warped now, then they head off to do Ozzfest for a bit. So check them out if you get the chance.
