Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
From the author of Wild at Heart comes a book that, by contrast, seeks to tame the human heart by turning it from its evil ways and training it for holiness. In contrast to the prevailing presumption of culture that holiness seems boring or “necessary like flossing, a level of spiritually we might attain to one day,” Eldredge says “holiness restores human beings.” For those who feel guilt or a weight of past sins, the book includes instruction about how to confess, seek forgiveness, and receive cleansing in order to live the holiness of God. The tone is at times strident and preacherly, but sincere and based in the teachings of Christ. He rails against “convenient” doubt: “Take notice just how convenient ‘doubt’ is for you.... Doubt is not a virtue. Doubt is not humility. Doubt is doubt. It is unbelief. Jesus understands doubt, and he wants us to get past it, not embrace it for heaven’s sake.” Ever full of gusto and nerve, Eldredge is as strict and orthodox a pastor as A.W. Tozer, but with hiking boots and a zipline.(Jan.)

"Ever full of gusto and nerve, Eldredge is as strict and orthodox a pastor as A.W. Tozer, but with hiking boots and a zipline."—Publisher's Weekly

"Eldredge uses his playful style to uncover the truth about who Jesus really was. With an eyebrow-raising warning about the "poison of religion," he urges readers to turn from religious power displays and legalism and instead spend time falling in love with the man, Jesus. Eldredge repeats tales from the Gospels to reveal a leader who was both humorous and confrontational, generous and moody. Eldredge clearly loves his subject, almost chuckling in delight at Jesus' antics. Readers get an intriguing glimpse of Jesus waiting his turn in line, "snorting" in anger, and artfully outsmarting his enemies. ... Still, readers will find a three-dimensional Jesus and may find themselves re-reading scripture with an eye on characters' feelings."—Publishers Weekly, on Beautiful Outlaw

"The Eldredges' newest book has bestseller written all over it...They are honest and forthright, never skirting a difficult issue; instead, they offer hope, insight, and their own lives as examples of what God can accomplish. Their summation of marriage. It can be done. And it is worth it. So is this book."
Publishers Weekly , on Love and War (Starred Review)

"The best, most insightful book I have read in the last five years. Every man and wife and every mother of a boy really should read this book."—Charles Swindoll, author of The Church Awakening, on Wild at Heart

Mr.  Eldredge nails it.  If you, as a Christian, are struggling with a variety of "issues" that could range from persistent and habitual sin, or certain character flaws, or even addictive behaviors, then this book is for you.  As always, his clear writing style coupled with excellent use of Scripture, as well as an honesty that  cam disarm you, all prevail in this book.  With all due respect to his peers John is a breath of fresh air.  You really need to read this book and see for yourself.

John Eldredge in his new book, "The Utter Relief Of Holines

John Eldredge in his new book, "The Utter Relief Of Holiness" published by FaithWords shows us How God's Goodness Frees Us from Everything that Plagues Us.

From the back cover: In the depths of your being, you ache for goodness; we all do. (Something caused you to pick up a book with the word holiness in the title!) We are made for goodness just as we are made to breathe, just as we are made to love. Whatever life has to throw at you, friends, goodness is your strength, your refuge in the storm. What a relief it would be to be set free from all that plagues us -- the inner struggle with anger, or contempt, the habitual sins. And there is a way to be good again.

Here is a book that explores the beauty of the genuine goodness available to us in Jesus Christ, and guides us through the process whereby God makes us whole and holy by his love. You will be relieved. Utterly.

God tells us, "Be ye holy as I am holy." That is where most people walk away. How can we be holy like God? What does it mean to be holy? All holy means is one notch higher, a higher quality, to be at the level of God. Can we be that high? John Eldredge points out what Paul wrote, "Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love." (Eph 1:4) So the answer is yes. Holiness is something we all long for just, somehow, do not know how to attain it. John Eldredge has broken down his book into two sections: Section One is The Surprise of Holiness and Section Two is The Way to Holiness. Six chapters in each section give us an understanding of what God has always meant for us and what actions we need to take to receive what God has for us. It is time to be relieved and "The Utter Relief Of Holiness" is a great resource to get there. Not only will you be blessed by reading it if you give it as a gift to your friends and family then they will be blessed also.
