Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The back cover of this title states it is part of a series of eight books all, about mummies. The reviewers' slip enclosed in this 32-page book describes it as intended for third and fourth graders to capture the attention of reluctant readers. What will surely capture their attention are the photographs of long-dead bodies, mummified and unwrapped. Most of the photographs could have been better sized and located to clarify the text. The chapter headings, in order, are: "Discovery of a Tomb," "Inside the Valley," "Building the Valley of the Kings" and "Mysteries Solved." The book opens with the 1995 discovery of the largest tomb ever found in the Valley of the Kings and states that millions of ancient Egyptians' bodies were mummified in accordance with their beliefs. Pyramids were the earliest sites for the tombs of kings, but they were prone to desecration and difficult to guard. The passageway through the Valley of the Kings has only one entrance and was easier to guard. The next chapter discusses the 18 tombs that have been discovered, how they are labeled, the number of mummies they contained, a photograph of the valley and a sketch showing the location of the discovered tombs. Chapter Three describes how the tombs were built, how and where the tomb builders lived and the way the tombs were decorated. The last and shortest chapter deals with those who study the history of the area and the work of scientists to learn more about these discoveries. 2004, Capstone Press, Ages 8 up.
