Overview

Spanning the years from 1967 to 1997, the papers contained in this volume stand together as a testament to the brilliance and foresight of one man, Dr. Nicholas A. Cummings, a past president of the American Psychological Association.

In 30 years, Cummings has had a lot to say. But more important than the profile of him that emerges is the profile that emerges of the field of psychotherapy. Through the eyes and words of this provocative pioneer, the current turmoil surrounding the delivery of mental health care services comes into sharp focus. One of topics on which Cummings has written extensively is the positioning of mental health care as a linchpin in the provision of health care in general.

In this book, the editors have gathered some of Cummings' most original and significant works. And they have enticed him to provide updates on those pieces. For all concerned about the future of health care in this country--whether from the perspective of provider or administrator--this volume will prove essential reading.
