The Phantom King, by Heather Killough-Walden

and sequel to The Vampire King

Siobhan Ashdown was born of magic; it rides her blood like a phantom, tainted and dark and unpredictable. She is a warlock, and the power within her is unlike any before known to her kind. So it's no surprise that the most powerful of the demons who feed off of this warlock magic not only recognizes the enormous potential she represents but determines that he will possess her at any cost.
Even if it means war with the entire supernatural world.

Thanatos has ruled Purgatory as the Phantom King since time immemorial. King of a vast plane of solitude, he is a free spirit, a lone rider, a tattooed man of wind and dust and nonexistent boundaries. Then he turns around one morning to find himself face to face with Siobhan Ashdown, a woman with hair as red and wild as his soul, eyes like melted gold, and a spirit as elusive as his own. Time stops, the world tilts, and the fact that she attacks him right off the bat does little to deter his romantic convictions - or his desire to sink his fangs into her neck.

Thirteen Kings are severed by lust and greed, an ancient vampire and his rogue creation lay claim to what is not theirs, the whisperings of war begin to shake the foundation of the supernatural world, and primordial evil awakens from its slumber to slither across the land in this second installment in the Big Bad Wolf spinoff series, The Kings, by Heather Killough-Walden.

The Phantom King is the stunning sequel to The Vampire King, the first book in The Kings series. Unbelievably amazing- not that I expect anything else from Heather. It starts out by introducing you to Siobhan, a warlock who hates using her dark magic for anything but good. She had just lost her boyfriend to a house fire when along comes Thanatos- or Thane for short. He is the most gorgeous man she had ever laid eyes on, but he's something more than a man. He's a king. The phantom king. And he wants Siobhan to be his queen. But he's not the only one after her. If you love suspense, drama, and a good paranormal romance, look no further! And if you love this book, be sure to check out other Heather Killough-Walden books! You'll love them all. I guarantee it! :)

***** Have you ever wished you could trade places and become the heroine...even just for a moment? ***** I give this book five stars only because ten isn't an option, seriously! Never before have I liked the second book in a series just as much if not more than the first, but after reading The Phantom King, I have a new favorite! Once again, HKW has me rooting for both guys and relating to the heroine. The characters are likable, that's important in a story. Thane is utterly delicious - the chemistry that he has with Siobhan is palatable, is believeable and is perfect. The desire that he has for her, and she for him, is something that the author allows us to feel, to experience right along with them. There was one scene in particular that I wanted to be her...and you'll know the one I refer to when you read this wonderful book! I highly recommend it...a must read for PNR lovers! Heather Killough-Walden is a fabulous author who shows the story...showing a story and telling a story are miles apart. Set back and get ready for the visual when you dive into The Phantom King today. :)

Brittany Weidenfeller ‎Heather Killough-Walden is probably one of the most addictive authors I’ve ever come across. Her writing style is unique. Her tales are sensational. The fact that she’s not been snatched up by some bigwig corporate publishing house blows my mind. I’ve tried to write reviews for her books before and I’ve always had the same problem. I never feel that I’m able to do them justice. I first found Heather when I came across The Heat (book 1 of the BBW series) while playing around on my new Nook nearly three years ago. I remember reading the first chapter and thinking, “she’s a good writer”, it took a few more chapters before I realized I was wrong. She wasn’t JUST a good writer, she was one of the best I’d ever read. Over the last couple of years, I’ve been reading her books as she releases them and every time I think that her next book can’t possibly live up to the last, I’m once again proven wrong. The fact that she’s able to write about the supernatural (my favorite. genre) and yet keep her books from becoming too dark/violent/gory and still have them turn out as exciting as they are, is a huge plus for me! Heather has to be one of the funniest women on the planet because the witty banter/inner dialogue struggle is laugh out loud funny! The passion and romance is insanely HOT and the action keeps you on the edge of your seat desperate for more. Not to mention the way that every one of the character's stories are so neatly intertwined and the way that it's all brought together in every book is nothing short of brilliant. I am seriously in awe of her writing. I've never cared for novels that have too much going on in the way of characters. Multiple p.o.v drive me crazy when it’s messy back and forth. I do not have this problem with The Big Bad Wolf series or it’s spin off The Kings. In fact I think that her biggest strength is that she can bring so much to the table and yet still make it work as flawlessly and as entertaining as she does. I don't know how you write your books so that they flow so well Heather, but you not only make it work, you make it so damn hard to pick a character to root for! They're ALL so equally amazing and SIZZLING hot! Thank you for going for your dreams and sharing your love of writing with us. I look forward to reading your books for many years to come and sharing them with others every chance I get!!! Thank you for everything, Brittany

The Phantom King by Heather Killough-Walden: Book two in the Kings series. Heather has really kicked it up a notch with this new book. Her stories are always "Can't put the book down-stay up all night long-forget to go to sleep-addictive" and this one is no slouch in the "just one more chapter" department. If you love paranormal romances, fast cars, faster motorcycles, handsome men looking for their "one and only" , strong and beautiful heroines, might, magic and steamy sex, Heather is your author. Each book is better than the one before, and this is her latest. Five Stars!

Siobhan, a very powerful warlock, unaware of the supernatural world around her is afraid of her power corrupting her so she creatively bleeds off excess stores of magic so as not to go dark. Thane, The Phantom King, is a brooding and lonely, tall dark and devastatingly handsome man who sits in his realm and has a penchant for rehabbing older model cars and motorcycles. I loved this book! Fabulous second installment of The Kings series…This book could stand alone but I would recommend first reading Heather’s BBW series and the Vampire King before delving into this one. I absolutely love the way that Heather can draw you into her world and captivate you from beginning to end…there are a lot of unanswered questions from previous installments in the BBW and the Kings series that are addressed in this book and some open ended questions that leave you hanging, drumming your fingers waiting for the next book in the series to come out (which if Heather loves her fans at all won’t be too long cuz I can’t wait!) Her creativity in mixing different supernatural beings in her scorching cauldron will leave you drooling for more! Sexy guys, Love, twists and turns, hot sex, intense fight scenes and a whole lot more are waiting for you in this book…Enjoy!

Heather Killough-Walden is an amazing and very talented writer! If you haven't read the Big Bad Wolf series, then make that a priority! In the Kings series we get to have our favorite characters back, even if it's for a little glimpse, hello Malcom Cole!, it is well worth it!! Thanatos or Thane is the phantom king. He rules Purgatory and meets his queen in Siobhan, a warlock who has never used her magic to harm anybody. Book 2 of this Kings series is just as well written as its predecessor The Vampire King. The story is not shy of action packed adventures as well as a sexy, sexy love scene that will leave you hot and bothered and wanting for more! Heather Killough-Walden sure knows how to end her books: she will leave you breathless and yearning to get your hands on the next sequel!! I can't wait to get my hands on book 3, the story of Jason Albreich and his search for his queen! Once you have read a Heather book, as me and my friends refer them to, you WILL be hooked to her style of writing and her great gift at story telling!!

This was fantastic!! Heather, you have succeeded once again!! This story of the Phantom King, in The Kings Series, will leave readers begging for more. This story may be one of my favorite meetings of love, when both Thane and Siobhan realize in their heart and soul that they were made for each other at first sight. I thoroughly enjoyed bringing in Lily, Charlie, and Kat and their partners from the BBW series. It tied everything together even more that neither the BBW or the Kings series is a spin-off, but a compliment to both series' together. It is so easy to get lost in a world of the paranormal that Heather creates when her stories include everything you could ask for: love, action, male egos/testosterone, suspense, powerful women, and sex. The most disappointing thing about her books- you want more. There is not one negative thing I could say, other than I hate the hollow feeling I have when I'm left waiting for the next book to be released. Anything by Heather is a must read!!

The Phantom King was an excellent read and very well written. Heather has a knack for being able to write in a way that makes you feel as if you were there with the characters - experiencing everything they do, fighting alongside them and going through the same emotional roller coaster they feel. I've read all of the Big Bad Wolf books and couldn't put them down - I was definitely not disappointed with this book at all! I definitely recommend all of her books :o)

The Phantom King is amazing. It will make you laugh , cry and use the words OMG what else can happen (then it does). Some of which you can see coming some you can not. I have enjoyed her books because they not only are about romance but everything that goes with it. This series has brought together 13 Kings from different otherworldly factions Vampires, Werewolf's. Phantoms, Seer's, Fey, just about any Magical or Paranormal being you can think of they are here and then she finds a new one to add in there (THE CAT). Can't wait to find out who the cat belongs to and why the warning to Siobhan. I have enjoyed this entire series. There are so many different things that i enjoy about her writing, being that she writes both sides The guys and the girls *what are they thinking * I have yet to decide who is my favorite King. I am a fan of all of them each for some special gift that Heather has deemed necessary for them to have. I hope that you continues and does all 13 Kings , I know I will be waiting on pins and needles for the next Kings (Jason) Queens appearance. I am planning to get the Angels series next but before I do I may just reread this entire series again. I have read a lot of paranormal books and these are one of the best.

The Vampire King was my introduction to Killough-Walden’s writing. The first time I read it, I immediately purchased The Big Bad Wolf Romance Compilation so I could get the background on the werewolves and the series that this book spun-off from. That’s how much I enjoyed the author’s writing – I immediately committed myself to almost one thousand more pages of her writing. I will admit that at the time, I was reading paranormal romances because the sex tends to be hotter due to the mating drive most supernatural creatures possess. And while Killough-Walden can write some seriously hot sex scenes, they are used judiciously as the author focuses on the character development and a storyline usually filled with action and suspense as the forces of good and evil battle it out. The Vampire King is all this and more. Although I read it prior to the Big Bad Wolf series, we first meet Roman D’Angelo in The Spell (I’m almost positive) and he remains a mystery in The Hunt as the author brought that series to a close while laying the foundation for The Kings series. But it was the sample of The Vampire King and the way in which the Prologue sets the stage for the action that had me finally giving in and buying the book. We actually meet Evie first as she seems to be nearing the end of her ability to hold out against being kidnapped and attacked repeatedly by another vampire who is out for revenge against Roman. Even as I reread the Prologue, I couldn’t help admire Evie’s fortitude in the face of so many changes in such a short time and her refusal to give in to end her suffering. Despite the fact that only a few weeks pass in the book, Killough-Walden crafts her characters and storyline so well that time seems irrelevant. It doesn’t feel as though Evie and Roman have just met. Their comfort and ease with one another served to solidify Roman’s belief that Evie was made for him and meant to be his queen. Although they don’t consummate their relationship until well into the book, there is plenty of attraction between the pair and it just makes their mating that much hotter. But because the author seems to like her characters to earn their happily ever after, there are forces working against the pair that threaten their very lives. One of the things I think the author does well is striking a balance between the couple of interest – Roman and Evie – while introducing the reader to the world of The Kings and laying the groundwork for future books in the series. At no point did I feel as though another of the kings was usurping Roman and Evie as the focus; the book is clearly about their developing relationship. Rather the author works Thane and Jason into the action in such a way that you get to know a bit about the men as they help Roman track down the traitor in their midst. Fans of the BBW series will be excited to know that the major players are still involved in The Kings series, with several having prominent roles in The Vampire King. Because of this fans get to catch up with what’s going on with the werewolves and the threat all supernaturals face from the recently reorganized hunters – and I cannot wait to see how that thread plays out over the series. I absolutely loved that I got the opportunity to reread The Vampire King and enjoyed watching Roman and Evie’s story play out all over again. I’m off to read The Phantom King now. I reviewed my personal copy of this book. Reviewed by Angela at Crystal's Many Reviewers!

This series by a self-published author contains characters and a storyline that is on par wiith and perhaps even better than more well-known lengthy series by authors like J.R Ward and kerrilyn sparks! I amm hooked!

Love the phantom kings movements! he springs out from the pages for me and fascinates me as each move he makes - calculated - to win his queen.... across many plains... the unbelieveable feeling of being able to put myself in the queen's shoes... Shioban is a hit! I can put books away in a day but find myself purposly having to tear myself away so that Im not left waiting too long between books. Ms Killough-Walden is so gracious and talented; she gives us so much and I can truly appreciate her sharing her work with us. Her talent allows us to share in the imagination and escape!
