Overview

A complete and generously illustrated survey of the accomplishments of this unconventional and influential landscape architect. One of the most exciting and popular designers working in the United States, Martha Schwartz has almost single-handedly redefined the notion of garden design and landscape architecture. With her background in printmaking, the Boston-based designer has brought an entirely new language to a traditionally horticulture-oriented profession. Ever since her Bagel Garden (1979) stirred controversy and attracted attention, she has been at the vanguard of her field, and her work is now celebrated and influential around the world. This is the complete monograph of Schwartz's corpus, some forty works, mostly built, from the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, Sweden, Britain, and elsewhere. Ranging in scope from idiosyncratic private gardens to urban plans, projects are presented through breathtaking photographs, accessible drawings, and plans. Schwartz describes her working practices, giving unique insight into the thinking behind her dynamic designs. The colorful, unconventional, and wide-ranging nature of Schwartz's work will appeal to a professional and to a nonprofessional audience, from urban planners to private gardeners. 310 color illustrations.

Author Biography: Martha Schwartz trained at Harvard's Graduate School of Design, where she has also taught, and is one of the world's preeminent landscape architects. Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Schwartz (Harvard Design Sch.) is considered one of the world's preeminent landscape architects and artists. Describing her own work as a space where "art and landscape are indistinguishable," she uses bright colors, sharp lines, and artificial structures to express whimsy and humor in her commissioned public spaces and private gardens. The book begins with an introduction by garden and landscape writer Richardson, who describes Schwartz's work in the context of contemporary architectural design and answers some of the criticism her work often receives. The monograph is punctuated with insightful essays by Schwartz about her life, education, and mission as an artist. The book reviews 32 of Schwartz's projects around the world, dating from 1979 to 2004. Each is documented with color photos (there are 300 color illustrations), sketches, quotes from Schwartz about the project, and brief commentary by Richardson, all adding context and understanding to each design. Since Schwartz's designs blur the line between art and landscape, this, the only book of her work in print, is recommended for libraries with large modern art and landscape design collections.
