The Vanishing Wetlands

( 2 )

Overview

Little more than a generation ago, swamps and other wetlands were seen as dank, useless places; as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and even disease. If not drained for development, they seemed to have no purpose--except as dumping grounds for old refrigerators, tires and cars. Today, however, we are learning of the value of swamps, bogs, marshes, and other wetland areas, and of the importance of preserving them.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 7-12-The strength of this book is its coverage of current political and economic attitudes toward these endangered habitats. Recent legislation, the Bush Administration's proposals, and the changing policies of conservationists and the Army Corps of Engineers are all discussed fairly. However, the chapter describing the areas' wildlife is dull and plodding, and the section on the types of wetlands and their geographic features is overloaded with technical terms and may prove daunting to readers. The black-and-white photographs are appropriate, but unfortunately are of poor quality. Dave Taylor's Endangered Wetland Animals (Crabtree, 1992) is a more attractive and readable presentation, while Helen Challand's Disappearing Wetlands (Childrens, 1992) and Frances Smith's First Book of Swamps and Marshes (Watts, 1969; o.p.) are better sources for the basics.-Meryl Silverstein, American Museum of Natural History, New York City
Mary Harris Veeder
Duffy provides defining specifics on what wetlands are, why they are vanishing, and what may be done to preserve them. The discussion is sufficiently technical (scientific names and ecodynamics are provided) for reports, yet manages to be general enough for the interested reader, providing answers to such popular questions as What are mosquitoes good for? Going beyond green-flag waving to explain such realities as mitigation banking and pollution credits, Duffy helps young enthusiasts move into practical science and politics.
