Philip Kindred Dick (1928-1982) was an American science fiction novelist and short story writer. Born in Chicago, Dick attended Berkeley High School in Berkeley, California with fellow science fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin, although the two did not know each other at the time. Dick sold his first story in 1951 and published his first novel in 1953, but struggled until the publication of THE MAN IN THE HIGH TOWER in 1963, which won a Hugo Award. He become one of the most successful scifi writers of the 1960s and 1970s, only to die suddenly in 1982.
