Overview

With the advance of mass tourism the museums have become identified

exclusively with the Raphael Rooms and with Michelangelo’s frescoes in

the Sistine Chapel, but the Vatican offers the public a vast number of historical, artistic and cultural itineraries and possibilities: from Egyptian art to contemporary graphics, via classical sculpture and Italian painting of the last seven hundred years, even offering, to those so inclined, the chance to see the papal carriages.

Most visitors press on towards the Sistine chapel, without ever leaving their chosen path. But those willing to leave the beaten track are likely to discover quiet and calm in the Vatican Picture Gallery, and stand undisturbed in front of masterpieces by Giotto, Leonardo and Caravaggio, or enjoy a solitary visit to the collection of Etruscan Art, one of the most important in the world for its quality and scope.
