Developed by vegan hipster Wheeler del Torro of Wheeler’s Frozen Desserts, these “faux” creams feature 100 percent vegan-certified ingredients, making them suitable for both vegans and those with lactose intolerance and other dairy aversions. And with each serving containing approximately 80 calories—nearly 100 calories fewer than a serving of traditional ice cream—you can indulge with peace of mind (and keep your trim waistline!).

Meet the Author

Wheeler del Torro is the founder and owner of Wheeler\u2019s Frozen Desserts, a microcreamery based in Boston that produces vegan ice cream using soy, coconut, rice and almond milks. Del Torro, who was born in Jamaica and moved to the U.S. as a teen, began the company in 2001, initially creating custom flavors for restaurants, companies, and high-end clientele. He opened his first store this year in Boston, and plans on opening a sister shop in L.A. soon. You can find him at www.icecreamproject.com.

Vegans and lactose intolerant individuals will be thrilled with Wheeler del Torros' book, The Vegan Scoop. For anyone who thinks that ice cream has to have dairy as its base, The Vegan Scoop will quickly dispel that notion. Wheeler's recipes work with any nondairy milk including soy, almond, rice, coconut, hemp, in combination with nondairy creamer. For low glycemic ice cream, you can substitute agave syrup for granulated vegan sugar and still end up with an amazing treat. So far, I have made chocolate, vanilla, chocolate chip, and chocolate marshmallow ice cream with my 25-year old Donvier non-electric canister ice cream machine which still works great. Recipes include Classic Flavors (Bubblegum), Fruity Flavors (Pomegranate), Healthy Flavors (Dark Chocolate Acai Berry), Asian Flavors (Green Tea), Caribbean and Island Flavors (Key Lime), Novelty Flavors (S'More), Aphrodisiacal Flavors (Thai Chile), Sauces (Caramel), Sides and Desserts (Twinkies, Belgian Waffles, Scones), to name just a few of the 150, mouth-watering recipes. In addition, there is a step-by-step guide on how to host an ice cream tasting party. There is even a nutritional breakdown chart comparing Wheeler's ice cream to five of the most popular brands. Wheeler's wins hands-down across the board. You will not feel deprived when you eat this stuff. Best of all, you will not feel a twinge of guilt if you have seconds of this low cal, low fat, low sugar, zero cholesterol, awesome-tasting frozen dessert!

my husband and i just went vegan, and he is a huge ben and jerry's lover, so i thought ice cream may be a deal breaker for him. we've tried to store bought vegan ice cream, soy coconut milk, numerous brands, but none of them have the right consistency. the recipes in here are great. the pistachio is to die for (although it's not that creamy) and the chocolate peanut butter swirl is super rich and creamy wonderfulness. he doesn't miss regular ice cream at all. totally worth it.
