Meet the Author

Barbara W. Ellis is a freelance writer, editor, and lifelong gardener. She is the author of many gardening books, including The Veggie Gardener’s Answer Book, Deckscaping, Shady Retreats, and Covering Ground. She holds a B.S. in horticulture from the Ohio State University, Columbus, and a B.A. from Kenyon College. She has worked as managing editor at Rodale Press and as publications director for the American Horticultural Society and is affiliated with the Hardy Plant Society Mid-Atlantic Group, the Garden Writers Association, and the Perennial Plant Association. She lives and gardens in Maryland, where she and her husband live in a renovated “green” home with an assortment of rescued dogs, cats, and parrots. Her garden, which is managed organically and designed to be wildlife-friendly, features a wide range of ornamentals, herbs, and edibles for both sun and shade.

    Easy to Use; Lots of Detailed Information

    Great book if you are just starting a veggie garden. Lots of details on every imaginable vegetable, and remembers to include the basics that a lot of gardening books presume you already know. Very pleased with the purchase. It has been an invaluable aid as I start my own vegetable garden.

    Takes the Intimidation out of Planting Veggies!

    love this book! I saw it at Barnes + Noble yesterday, looked at it for five minutes and had to have it! I've been reading it since and am very pleased. For years I've been wanting to plant a vegetable garden, but have been intimidated. Barbara Ellis has written this book to remove the fears of planting. The layout is great, with questions and answers laid out in a logical format. The book is jammed pack with information, tips, problem solving techniques and it's all about organic! I even like the size and feel of the book.It's just over 4' x 6' and over an inch thick and over 400 pages long. The cover is really sturdy--something I like, as I tend to be rough with my 'how to' books. The illustrations are simple but good, too. I highly recommend this book!

    This has good information but I would have liked it to have more pictures especially in the section on plant disease.
