The Ventriloquist Whale
A novella and six short stories about revenge, political paranoia, stagnant lives yearning for escape, a sense of duty—and the enduring magic of cinema. The Aveyardo twin sisters recount the story of their lives in Oríbe, a small village in the middle of nowhere that draws eccentric artists, craftsmen, and scientists of all kinds. But what connection do they have to the mysterious clergyman in search of the Ventriloquist Whale? How can the red underwear of The Leader influence the citizens of a dystopian society? What happens when an East German intellectual is confronted with his wife's departure—before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall? Why does a couple who fled the city due to unbearable heatwaves never return from the deserted mountain village they escaped to? What thoughts pass through the mind of a woman seated behind the glass at a toll booth? And how does a critic present The Census, the most overlooked masterpiece in the history of Greek cinema? This is a collection that balances surrealism with social commentary, political tension with absurdity, and the everyday with the extraordinary.
