All Music Guide - Evan Cater
It is impossible to compile a single-disc greatest-hits compilation for Cat Stevens that will come close to satisfying all of his admirers. The Very Best of Cat Stevens is the fifth major attempt to do so and, like its predecessors, it is challenged by its subject's success. Remember Cat Stevens: The Ultimate Collection is the longest of the five 24 tracks and may be the most comprehensive. But The Very Best of Cat Stevens, released just a year later, has several advantages that make it more appealing. To begin with, it is the only compilation to sequence chronologically songs from every one of Stevens' albums, including the experimental Foreigner. It also contains the delightful folk creed "The Wind," which was a glaring omission from the so-called Ultimate Collection. Most significantly, it contains the previously unreleased "I've Got a Thing About Seeing My Grandson Grow Old." Stevens recorded a demo of the song during the Mona Bone Jakon sessions in 1970, but it never saw the light of day until it was remixed for this collection. Perhaps this was because it was considered too eccentric for public consumption, straddling the line between the hook-rich pop of Stevens' '60s records and the groundbreaking folk-rock of his '70s efforts. If so, the public was vastly underestimated. The song is a buried treasure that fits in perfectly in the company of Stevens' best work.

I've Got A Thing About Hearing This Man Sing

Ever since my English teacher introduced me to the song "Wild World", I have been listening to Cat Stevens. I was born in 1988 and I seem too young to listen to oldies but that's all I listen to. This is actually the first cd I bought from him. His music really gets to me when I feel unhappy. His lyrics have such powerful meaning that translate to what emotions Stevens felt through his music. My number one favorite film is Harold and Maude, which features popular hits from Stevens. This cd includes beautiful songs that I enjoy such as "The first cut is the deepest", "Father and Son", "Peace Train", etc. I am quite surprised that he became a Muslim and changed his name to Yusuf Islam. His voice is still genuine though. He was always searching for something more in life and that was peace and he found it. Cat Stevens will always stay as a legend and a talented guitarist and singer. If you are into 70's music then pick up The Very Best of Cat Stevens...His voice and music will never die.

Youth can still appreciate the classics

Okay... so I'm a 15 year old girl I should like 50 cent and Christina Aguilera, I know, I know... I get it. "How can you ever really appreciate Cat when you never got to experience in his prime?" you ask? My reply would be "Cat Stevens will always be in his prime... A living legend." All I know is that Cat Stevens is an amazing guitatrist, singer, songwriter and person and I'm more willing to throw my guitar around my back and strum along to "Wild World" then to throw up gang signs and spew deragatory remarks to people in the halls. He's amazing, just simply amazing.

    MEMORIES OF THE PAST

This album brings back alot of memories. I use to listen to Cat Stevens on 8 track if you can believe that. Catch a Bull at Four was my faviorte. I wish cut 15 could of been replaced with Angela from Catch a Bull at Four. The music and his voice are haunting and at the same time relaxing with the songs having meaning. I received this CD from my son for Christmas. The one thing that stands out is how you can understand what he is saying (singing). A far cry from alot of todays music. Thanks Cat for all the good music.

Hearing the Future in the Words of the Past

This brings to mind all of the fine truth in Cat Stevens' music that made it so approachable to so many people in the 70's. Knowing the choices he made in the years after these recordings you can so clearly see a path of questions and realizations that led him to his future. But the musicality stands on its own, the songs don't just stand up because of what we read into them now, but as strong songs from the start. They make you calm and optimistic. It is a great man in any business and of any faith that can combine all aspects of his life and make the artistry work of the faith, and the faith for the artistry. Stevens was a smart and sexy 70's kid, but is a much more impressive adult.
