With their roots firmly planted in the Philly soul tradition of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff Teddy Pendergrass, the O'Jays, Hall and Oates transcended racial and chart boundaries with synth-funk-drenched jams such as the irrepressible "I Can't Go for That No Can Do," which spent time atop both the pop and R&B charts. Other highlights of this excellent compilation include the precious pop gems "You Make My Dreams Come True" and "Private Eyes" and grittier chart-toppers "Adult Education" and "Method of Modern Love." On the latter track, the limber-voiced Hall inquires, "We know what we're doing, don't we?" After listening to this nostalgic collection, the obvious answer to that question is a resounding yes.

There's one thing wrong with The Very Best of Daryl Hall & John Oates, and it's minor -- the promotional 12" mix of "Adult Education" is included in favor of the 7" version. This isn't a big deal and it doesn't mar what is the best overview of Hall & Oates' RCA years, the era when they became the biggest-selling duo in the history of rock. If the Atlantic years were more adventurous, dabbling in folk and album rock, The Very Best of demonstrates the virtues of consistency, since these blue-eyed soul songs rank among the very finest singles and songs of their time. And Hall & Oates weren't unadventurous, either, since they deftly blended elements of new wave, contemporary soul, and soft rock into their signature sound. Most impressively, smaller hits like "Wait for Me" and the splendid "Did It in a Minute" easily one of the greatest songs they ever cut more than hold their own alongside familiar items like "Sara Smile," "You Make My Dreams," "Private Eyes," and "Maneater." Hall & Oates may not have been hip, but they made addictive soul-pop that not only rocketed to the top of the charts but has stood the test of time as some of the best pop made during the early '80s.

    Falwless

    THis is the best CD ever!!! The only thing wrong with it is there is no "She's Gone" or "One on One" which personally are two GREAT songs. But what's not to love? It has everything from Sara Smile to Method od Modern Love. 5 stars

    Oh Yeah!

    This is one of my favorite CD's and it has everything you want.It has all the early hits like sara smile and rich girl,also it has their biggest hits like"kiss on my list,private eyes,i can't go for that(no can do)and maneater.It also has some minor hits like family man and wait for me.Overall it is an awesome album.It truely shows the greatness of hall and oates' sound.

    Hall & Oates are the best.

    Hi, I just wanted to let everyone know that this album is awesome. It has a bunch of great hits mixed together with older ones as well as newer songs. Because I am such a huge fan, I am biased, but seriously, listen to this album, then listen to their latest album, Do it for love and you'll see how talented, gifted, and what wonderful music is written by these men. I can't help it, I just love everything they've done and love to share this with the world. If you expand your horizons with music today and don't just focus on one type of music, you'll see what I mean. Try it, you might not like every song, but I bet they'll be one at least one or two that you'll like. Trust me---#1 fan, Svava

    This is the Very Best of all the Best

    This album is the best one out there. It has such a mix of all their hit songs on one CD. Such as "Sara Smile" a terrific classic and "Wait for Me" an absolute awesome soulful ballad by Daryl and John. Daryl Hall and John Oates have continued to make great music over the last 30 years and with each new album they just keep getting better. Just when you think they out done even themselves, they do it again. Although I love all their albums this one is a MUST have for all.
