The Very Best of John Coltrane [Universal International]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
This is no less than the fourth Very Best of John Coltrane since 2000. Three of them were issued in the U.S. and this one, issued under the UNI International umbrella in Japan, on Impulse of course, is a double-disc offering that completely covers the Impulse period in its track list.
In addition to familiar selections such as "In a Sentimental Mood," "After the Rain," and "Soul Eyes," there are the longish reads of "Greensleeves," "Dear Lord," "A Love Supreme: Part 1: Acknowledgement," a live version of "My Favorite Things," and "Afro Blue," among others from the later period, though nothing from the past Meditations era. This is a nice selection, but there is nothing new under the sun here and even as an introduction to the Impulse period it falls a tad short given its almost complete absence of the really out there material. There are better collections than this one for far, far less money.
