Overview

Those new to the Hooker legend, and perhaps wondering from whence the legend sprang, are urged to check out this splendid 20-song overview of a career that has been influential beyond the bounds of blues. While completists may prefer one of the many narrower-focused albums surveying specific eras of a career that began in 1948, THE VERY BEST OF JOHN LEE HOOKER covers many of Hooker's finest angles. Beginning with the 1948 landmark "Boogie Chillun" -- that primordial, relentless, Homeric vamp that has found its way into rock 'n' roll's lingua franca -- The disc shows off Hooker's evolution as he moved from the Modern, Chess, Vee-Jay, Riverside, Impulse!, and Blueway labels, adding to and subtracting from various band formats, but remaining defiantly John Lee Hooker, no matter the context. The great Vee-Jay cut, "Boom Boom," is here, along with the cathartic "It Serves Your Right to Suffer," as well as a cut from his blues summit with Canned Heat ("Burning Hell") and a galvanizing version of Robert Johnson's "Terraplane Blues," cut for Roy Rogers's album, SIDEWINDER. In the end, John Lee Hooker is virtually a blues genre unto himself, a point this disc emphasizes with every foreboding guitar lick.
