Overview

This impressive 30-song, two-CD collection only scrapes the surface of an influential career that spans some 40 years. Nevertheless, THE VERY BEST OF WILLIE NELSON works beautifully on a couple of levels. For starters, it reminds us, as if we need to be reminded, of what a stellar song interpreter Nelson has always been -- a vocalist whose languorous approach belies an acute sense of what makes a song's narrative tick, and who explores those nuances as subtly and rhythmically as a jazz singer. Second, although most of the songs here were written by others, Nelson originals such as "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground" (a live cut) compare favorably to some of the great pop standards in his repertoire. The cuts here date from 1974's "After the Fire Is Gone" (a scintillating duet with Tracy Nelson) to 1989's "Nothing I Can Do About It Now." Surprises? None, really. But there's nary a dull moment either. Hey -- it's Willie!

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Spanning two discs and 30 songs, The Very Best of Willie Nelson isn't as sublime as Greatest Hits (& Some That Will Be), which came close to capturing the essence of Willie Nelson's Columbia recordings in 20 tracks. The Very Best covers more ground and, technically, it has more charting hits, but it isn't as far-reaching and diverse as Greatest Hits, which gave equal ground to country, western swing, folk, and pop. This collection tends toward obvious choices, emphasizing covers of pop songs instead of his more obscure choices or original material. Consequentially, it isn't the most representative collection possible, but it will satisfy many casual fans who want Nelson's late-'70s and '80s hits and songs that sound like them.

I liked this Cd, most of the songs are my favorites, I would of liked all of them to be, but no one can guess out of all the buyers which ones are their favorites. It isn't possible, but wouldn't it be nice to pick your favorites and it then be put on a CD? Oh well, I liked it anyway.I like the instrumental parts besides the singing. I don't think there is a song of his that I don't like.I would recommend it.
