Drop any image you have of the Contours' Motown sound or this "very best" CD -- including late-period recordings for Ian Levine's Motorcity label -- will be that much more disappointing. The two original members, Sylvester Potts and Joe Billingslea, played minor roles in regards to lead singing for the original group, so their presence doesn't authenticate the sound. Contouring with Potts and Billingslea are Darryl Nunlee, Arthur Hinson, and Charles Davis. Listening to this will have you longing for some good handclaps, a definitive bass, a kicking drummer, and a sense of urgency in the singers. ~ Andrew Hamilton
