This book gives good explanations about aspects of the biblical Christmas story that can be difficult for kids to understand (such as, why didn't Joseph and Mary go to a motel rather than a stable?). The illustrations are gorgeous. Although this book seems to be written for an evangelical-Christian audience I think non-Christian kids would easily understand it too. I highly, highly recommend this book. It is just a *little* beyond my 5 year old's comprehension, so I think it would be best for ages 6 and above.
I loved this book as it was a well told story of the real first Christmas of Jesus's birth, with both a story line and quotes directly from the bible. I bought this book for a younger grandchild (age 1) but after reading it and the maturity of the understanding of the words it would be better suited for mid age children like from 5-9. I gave it to my grandson anyway and my daughter reads it to him. He will hopefully have it forever and grow into it. The important thing for me was that he learn the true meaning of Christmas. For children that young they should make one with thick cardboard like pages. This is a good buy and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to teach their children about the story of Jesus.
The Very First Christmas was given to my family as a gift when I was a child. We loved to snuggle up and hear the real story of christmas. I now plan to share the book with my children and pass it out to my friends who have children. It is really a great book.
