Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Rachel Myers
"Mine!" says the very greedy bee when the ladybug wants to sit on his flower. "Mine!" shouts the very greedy bee when another bee wanted to drink nectar out of the same flower. The very greedy bee wants everything for himself until he flies from flower to flower, drinking nectar and getting fatter. Finally, he finds that he is so fat that he has trouble making it back up into the air from his last flower. Night falls, and the very greedy bee gets scared of never making it home, until two fireflies guide his way. The group comes upon a stream which the bee must cross to get to his hive. The fireflies and ants that live nearby help the very greedy bee float over the stream on a large leaf, and they also help him learn the meaning of sharing and working together. The very greedy bee has to admit to his hive that he "overslurped" and had to rely on the help of the other bugs to make it back to the hive, where he invites everyone in for a drink of his very finest honey. Alliteration and the sounds of bugs are sprinkled throughout this story, making it a fun read aloud book. Bright, colorful illustrations make the story come to life. Children will see the lesson that the very greedy bee has learned by overindulging and admitting his mistakes. Reviewer: Rachel Myers

PreS - K - A greedy bee guzzles nectar and gobbles pollen, and won't share with anyone. He won't even let a tired ladybug rest on his flower. One day the bee comes upon a meadow full of juicy blossoms. He goes from flower to flower, slurping up all he can, all the while growing fatter and fatter, until he is unable to fly home. He is scared, especially when he sees two eyes glowing from the long grass, but then discovers that they are fireflies, and they offer to escort him home. At last they reach the bank of the stream, and he is assisted across by a team of ants with a big leaf. When the bee finally arrives home safely, he offers to share his best honey with his new friends and his fellow bees. The cartoonlike artwork, with bold, rounded, brightly colored creatures, leaps off the page. The rousing text, replete with sound effects and varied fonts, will work well with groups. A pleasing addition for larger collections.-DeAnn Okamura, San Mateo County Library, CA
