Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
The Vietnam War remains one of the most controversial conflicts in American history. For a period of time lasting for more than a decade, American troops waged war in a relatively small Southeast Asian country for a cause that ultimately proved supremely misguided. An estimated two million Vietnamese citizens and over 56,000 Americans perished in a war that featured the most powerful nation in the world standing in opposition to a determined guerrilla force using asymmetrical tactics. In the end American forces withdrew from Vietnam and stood idly by while our North Vietnamese and Vietcong foes swept on to victory. Now, forty years after the American withdrawal, Vietnam is a unified nation that no longer is at odds with the United States. The story of the highly complex, long lasting, and brutally destructive Vietnam War is told in this one volume history via the biographies of six key figures. Through the life stories of Ho Chi Minh, John F. Kennedy, General William Westmorland, Henry Kissinger, President Diem, and Lyndon Johnson author Daniel Polansky presents the intricate, and in many ways tragic, evolutions that shaped the course of the war. Each of these mini-biographies is well written and presents the story of a critical player in the drama that was the Vietnam War in ways that will inform readers. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
