Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kip Wilson
One of titles in the "Wars Day by Day" series produced by Brown Bear Books, this book engages readers with authentic photographs and eyewitness reports. Images in this book include photographs of people, places, and battles of the Vietnam War. Each spread is built around facts based on a timeline, which becomes increasingly more detailed as the war progresses. Glossary terms are highlighted and defined both on the specific page and in the back of the book for reference. The timeline format places the events of the war in context, but many young readers will ignore the date headers, and some of the events, such as "Operation Thayer I begins," might be distracting. Some of the text in the timelines is a little dry, but the eyewitness accounts are especially appealing. These accounts are set off as images, which look like scraps of notebook paper, and include authentic text from combat medics to pilots. The sidebars with information featuring key people, key weapons, and turning points contain well-written, interesting summaries about events such as the My Lai massacre. Overall, this book includes many interesting facts and should be a great springboard for readers looking for an overview of the most important events of the Vietnam War. Reviewer: Kip Wilson

Gr 6-8

The books in this series include two pages of social, economic, and historical background before launching into the events, which are presented in a timeline of significant dates. Civil War explores the reluctance of Southern states to give up their rights to a federal government, and the time line discusses, for example, legislation that was passed before and after the war. On the other hand, though the introductory material provides some depth, the events described in the chronological sections are not analyzed, but merely presented in a dry listing. They are accompanied by eyewitness quotes and fact boxes that do not always appear on the relevant page. However, the time lines will serve as ready-reference resources for classrooms.
