The Voice of America

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Decca's The Voice of America pays tribute to the United States' traditional songs, show tunes, and anthems with two discs' worth of performances by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Marilyn Horne, Bryn Terfel, and other artists. Each disc begins with one of the country's quintessential songs -- disc one with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" and disc two with Robert Merrill's version of "America the Beautiful." From there, the collection explores the contributions songwriters such as George M. Cohan "You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There", Irving Berlin "You're a Grand Old Flag", Lerner & Loewe "They Call the Wind Maria" from Paint Your...

Cohan "You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There", Irving Berlin "You're a Grand Old Flag", Lerner & Loewe "They Call the Wind Maria" from Paint Your Wagon, and Rodgers & Hart "Oklahoma" have made to America's canon of popular songs. But the best-represented author, so to speak, is Anonymous; nearly half of the collection consists of choral versions of traditional American songs such as "Simple Gifts," "Sourwood Mountain," "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," and "Yankee Doodle Dandy." The set also touches briefly on composers such as Barber, Hanson, and Previn, nodding to each with renditions of "I Hear an Army From Songs," "Song of Democracy," and "Three Dickinson Songs," respectively. Other highlights include Gregory Peck's "Lincoln Portrait" and Simon Estes' interpretation of "I Have a Dream" from King: A Musical Testimony. Not surprisingly, considering the label that released this collection and the artists who performed on it, The Voice of America tends toward elaborate, classically inspired interpretations that suit pieces such as the anthems and show tunes well, but aren't quite as flattering to inherently simple, traditional songs like "The Old Folks at Home." Nevertheless, The Voice of America is lovingly and expertly crafted, and should please most fans of classical and American music alike.
