Overview

This is part of a series of eight Decca double-disc sets on the theme of "The Voice of" vocal compilations individually relating to such topics as Christmas, Mozart, Romance, the Baroque, and others. Opera would obviously serve as a central point of interest in such an undertaking, and Decca does not disappoint in this respect. Included here are many of the basic opera hits, with the compilation being naturally weighted somewhat toward Italian opera, but at least touching upon Mozart, the Baroque era, and French- , German- , Russian- , and English-language opera. The Voice of Opera is decidedly not for specialist tastes -- die-hard opera "philistines" will not only have what they would want here, they will deliberately not have the selections they wouldn't want. The repertoire scope of the two-disc set is generous, extensive, and yet superficial. Nonetheless, for someone who has little or no grounding in opera, this package will prove valuable as a means of introduction, and it may well prove ideal for teachers seeking key opera excerpts for use in music appreciation classes. The recordings date from 1958 to 2000, so the sound quality tends to vary, although it is never less than acceptable and the transitions are subtle enough that it is likely few will notice the changes in sound quality. Artists and performances are drawn from the whole catalog of labels under the Universal Music Group umbrella, so there is nothing included here that could be regarded as "second-rate" in any respect.
