Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite 'The Volunteer Traveler's Handbook - How to find ethical and sustainable international volunteer opportunities' by Shannon O'Donnell covers the topic of an ideal volunteer experience extensively, making it an interesting guide. The author's advice is based on personal experiences, meeting local people, and interacting with them. The book also gives practical tips for adjusting as a volunteer, personal strategies, traveling advice, and also the ethics of volunteering. The theme and contents of this book are very captivating. It is a topic that not many of us are aware of and also not many books are written on the subject. Hence, it makes an informative guide for people who are keen to volunteer. The author's personal experiences in the book make it more fascinating.  I always thought that traveling is the biggest education one can get because it widens your perspective and it brings you into direct contact with the culture and traditions of another country. I found the book like a travelogue because you get to read about other countries. The author also speaks about how to take care of yourself while travelling in a foreign land and how to adapt to the local milieu. She also tells us about the vaccines which have to be taken before traveling to developing countries and what to include in the travel medical kit. On the whole, it is an informative handbook for those who are keen to do volunteer work. The author has covered all relevant topics very well.

The book is a great primer for anyone looking to volunteer ethically. It covers the ethics of volunteering (really should we be out there and is our time going toward worthy projects) and development topics, media stereotypes and how to choose an organization. The author has traveled a lot, and she shares a lot of useful travel tips and information for packing and immersing in the local culture once you arrive at your volunteer location!
