Children's Literature
It is not easy to live without vowels as this zany tale will show. At the book's start, a text pattern is established when Pm Smth and Sm Vwl get married and start raising a family. When children arrive in the family, the vowels in their names are added to the words in the book's text. In so doing, the story gets more readable for those who are hearing it and for the characters involved in it. Situations include a school setting, kids getting exotic pets, cooking, going to the lumber yard, getting lost, and library time. When all is said and done, the Vowel family has added A, E, I, O, and U to their language and all the words make sense. The author has created a unique way to teach about vowels without being didactic. The tale is filled with humor, both in text and through illustrations, and it is sure to open up many vowel teaching opportunities. Children of the intended target age will delight in deciphering and also in creating words without vowels. Alan and Ellen's clear speech made sense." But life still isn't perfect. Increasing clarity comes to the Vowel family as Iris, Otto, and Ursula are born. When Otto gets lost, Aunt Cyndy arrives and suggests that they try the library because Otto always loved a good story. Sure enough, he is there. Not only is the family finally whole, but they have also discovered a new favorite place to visit. Secure readers will enjoy guessing the masked words that Walker uses to tell the tale, though those without a strong vocabulary may be occasionally "flmmoxed." Luthardt's colorful images have an appealing, Gumby-like quality and amusing detail. Teachers looking for a read-aloud to introduce vowels to young listeners will have to be extra-creative in their delivery of this mostly vowel-less text. Meet the Author

Sally M. Walker is the author of many award-winning nonfiction books for young readers, including Secrets of a Civil War Submarine: Solving the Mysteries of the H.L. Hunley, which won the prestigious Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal in 2006. When she isn't busy writing or researching, Ms. Walker works as a children's literature consultant and presents at many reading conferences. She lives in DeKalb, Illinois, with her husband and cats.

Kevin Luthardt is the author of several children's picture books. His original murals decorate schools, libraries, and churches throughout his home state of Illinois. He lives in the Chicago area with his wife and two sons.
