“The world of ships and sailing comes to life with Mariconda’s rich details.”
Children's Literature - Desiree Solso
Lucy grew up with a love of the sea and singing sea chantey's with her sea fairing father. After a tragic accident at sea Lucy is left an orphan. All Lucy wants is to live in her "Ship on Shore" house with Addie, her beloved housekeeper, until her eccentric Aunt Pru can be found. Instead she is forced into the care of her greedy Uncle Victor and his equally greedy wife. Lucy suspects all is not as it seems and sets out to find out the truth about her Aunt Pru. Stealth, cunning, and a magic flute seem to be all there is to help the courageous Lucy P. Simmons uncover the riddle of her long lost Aunt. That is, until her uncle Victor decides to send her a boarding school and she meets her mysterious new school mistress Marni. The school mistress is not all that she seems to be and welcomes Lucy into her home where she is also caring for the three young Perkins children to keep them from their abusive father. Lucy is safe and happy until she is forced to return to her uncle. Just when Lucy thinks all is lost and she is trapped in the clutches of her evil uncle the house suddenly begins to change. Magic and mystery cause the waves to break the shore and the beloved house suddenly transforms into a real life ship. Once all is safe, Lucy, Marni and the three Perkins children (Walter, George and Annie) embark on their new voyage to find Aunt Prudence Simmons. This book is sure to captivate and entice readers of all ages. Young readers who enjoy magic, mystery and exciting sea voyages would be sure to enjoy this book. I would highly recommend this author to young readers. Reviewer: Desiree Solso
Kirkus Reviews
Magic helps an orphaned heiress fight a rapacious uncle out to steal the family fortune. After her parents drown off the coast of Maine in 1906, Lucy is left in the care of her aunt. Unfortunately, Aunt Prudence is off in Australia tracking down a family curse, and greedy Uncle Victor steps in to control Lucy and the purse strings. Lucy has both her faithful servant and a good dose of magic on her side. She suspects that her uncle is up to no good and snoops through his papers, aided by beautiful magical mists. When her uncle decides to send her to boarding school, another magical creature shows up in the form of the teacher. The only other students at the school are three children desperately trying to avoid their drunken father, known as the Brute. Lucy tries to connect the dots between the teacher, a woman in a painting in her father's study and a mysterious woman seen walking on the shore. Events come to a highly dramatic and visually stunning conclusion. However, Mariconda leaves the reader with unresolved threads. What is the source of the magic? What will happen on the next voyage? Adventurous possibilities await in a necessary second installment. (Historical fantasy. 8-12)
