An integrative approach to healing chronic autoimmune conditions by a doctor, researcher, and sufferer of progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) whose TEDx talk is already a web sensation
Like many physicians, Dr. Terry Wahls focused on treating her patients’ ailments with drugs or surgical procedures—until she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2000. Within three years, her back and stomach muscles had weakened to the point where she needed a tilt-recline wheelchair. Conventional medical treatments were failing her, and she feared that she would be bedridden for the rest of her life.
Dr. Wahls began studying the latest research on autoimmune disease and brain biology, and decided to get her vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids from the food she ate rather than pills and supplements. Dr. Wahls adopted the nutrient-rich paleo diet, gradually refining and integrating it into a regimen of neuromuscular stimulation. First, she walked slowly, then steadily, and then she biked eighteen miles in a single day. In November 2011, Dr. Wahls shared her remarkable recovery in a TEDx talk that immediately went viral. Now, in The Wahls Protocol, she shares the details of the protocol that allowed her to reverse many of her symptoms, get back to her life, and embark on a new mission: to share the Wahls Protocol with others suffering from the ravages of multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions.

As a registered, licensed dietitian I am privileged to work with Dr. Wahls in her current research. I see first-hand how study participants adhering to the “Wahls Protocol” food patterns can move steadily towards improvements in fatigue and increased vitality. This book takes you on that journey of hope. It carefully guides you through each food group recommendation and provides background as to why it is important. More than a cutting edge “diet book” it captures the insights of a warm, compassionate physician who has experienced the triumph of taking control of her own health. She is passionate about sharing what she has learned and improving the lives of others with chronic disease conditions that threaten their well-being.

I have Early Onset Parkinson's Disease. The Wahls protocol diet and principals have helped me get off, and stay off, 90 % of my meds for over a year now. I recently was able to go back to work. I drive, hike, garden... all those thing I could no longer do when my "specialist" deemed me "permanently disabled." I had 5 neurologists, and not one of them ever asked me "What do you eat?" I truly thank God for Dr. Wahls. I know where I'd still be without her! Most sincerely, with thanks, Kelly Aguirre, Austin, Texas

Wow, I have been also reading "Wheat Belly" and Grain Brain" and have totally changed my diet and how I approach the grocery store.  I am recommending this book to a friend who suffers from MS.  Thanks!

This book is so thorough and really well written. I have learned more from The Wahls Protocol than any book I have read on health and healing so far. I don't have MS. I have Parkinson's Disease. I found similarities, answers, tools, specific guidelines, a wealth of knowledge and most importantly support and hope as I navigate through what, at times, seems like a long, dark tunnel. Dr. Wahls, your journey from your wheelchair up onto your bicycle moved me to tears and inspires me to move forward.... one step at a time. I have already implemented many of your ideas into my daily life. Already small changes are occurring. I do not know what the future holds. What I do know is the gratitude I feel in this moment to you Dr. Wahls for being a beacon of bright light.        Nancy S.

I’ll never forget the day Terry Wahls stopped in my office doorway and asked, “Melody, have you noticed anything different about me lately?” Indeed I had! Before she was always in her wheelchair. On this day, she was walking. She proceeded to tell me about her electrical stimulation and dietary changes. I’ve been fortunate to witness her continued improvement since that day (including the day she mentioned that she had sold her wheelchair and when she first rode her bicycle). I am very fortunate to have good health, to not have a disease such as MS. However I’ve found much of value in The Wahls Protocol. I’ve increased my intake of vegetables and greens and am now trying out a variety of fermented foods. I feel increased energy (although I did not think I lacked energy before) an have almost no desire for muffins, cookies and other junk. This book is not only for those who are ill, but also for those who are well.

I ordered this book as a gift for a friend of mine with MS. I had heard Dr. Wahls interviewed and watched her TedX video. Though I was intrigued by her story, I was not prepared for how powerful this book is. I wanted to skim over it before giving it to my friend and just reading the introduction captivated me. I ended up reading the entire book and buying a copy for myself. Dr. Wahls lays out a simple and easy-to-understand explanation of the formation of autoimmune disease and follows with a comprehensive approach to healing on the cellular level. This is a rather revolutionary approach that I believe will one day become the standard of practice for such debilitating diseases. Everyone can benefit from the information in this book. The encouragement and hope that flows throughout the pages is uplifting and inspiring. The practical knowledge and simple techniques to apply her principals to diet and lifestyle allow for personalization and adaptation at many levels. After the book Wheat Belly introduced me to the harm that our Standard American Diet has been doing to us, I began a journey of research and education that will never stop. This book is a must have, and frankly, goes at the top of my list of recommendations.

This book has seriously changed my life, if not saved it! I have RRMS and my doctors were on a path that was slowly killing me.  I started the Wahl's protocol and am now living DMD free!  My symptoms are actually diminishing and I am no longer sick from taking drugs that I consider to be experimental for slowing the disease progression of MS.  Thank you Dr. Terry Wahls!

I found this book to be excellent in its intent but late with its message. The gist of it is that nutritionally dense whole foods including red meat (heaven forbid) are essential if you suffer from an autoimmune disease like MS and you actually want to get well again. Overall I think it is very well done considering it was written by a MD. As I read this book I got the feeling that a better and more honest title for it might have been “Confessions Of A M.D., I Apologize To All The Patients I Inflicted Pharmaceutical Drugs On, All The While Knowing They Could Not Heal You And Even In Many If Not Most Cases Made You Even Sicker, Until I Became Ill With A Life Threating Disease Known As MS And I Decided I Didn’t Want To Be Treated The Way I Treated You. At That Point I Walked Away From The American Medical Association And Became More Like A Naturopathic Doctor And Present To You Here The Wahls Protocol, A Non-Radical Old Way To Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions As Well As Any Other Non-emergency Disease Condition That Naturopathic Doctors And Other Kinds Of Practioners Have Been Aware Of For Hundreds If Not Thousands Of Years”. What? Too Long? Actually you could say that the clinical trials Terry is conducting in order to prove the validity of her protocol is nothing short of a miracle.  I do find it humorous to read that she still insists on scientific studies and trials that support the efficacy of something before she will recommend it even though the vast majority of those same kinds of studies clearly show pharmaceutical drugs to be detrimental to us human beings (just read any of their side effect warning booklets (they're that long) and she doesn’t mention NDs, that I could see, until page 329 even though as I said above this approach to real health has been known to them since their inception.  But then NDs can’t prescribe pharmaceutical drugs as part of their protocols.  I mean she pointed out very well that allopathic experience with disease was no help in getting her out of her scooter and speaking of scooters, the people that rely on ill people for making their scooter sales quota may seek to have this book banned, the information in it is that good. I read through the Functional Medicine site Terry references and I am impressed with their stated goals and this is my interpretation of their message which seems to be that many good, non-sociopathic allopathic medicine practitioners are fed up with not being able to really help their patients return to states of health and realizing that due to the infinitely complex makeup of the human being pharmaceutical drugs are really only helpful in acute and emergency situations, that they are banding together for their own safety and that of their patients from a very hostile pharmaceutical industry to try this new (old) approach to returning to optimum states of health with the caveat that they will include pharmaceuticals when appropriate. What? Too long again?
