    Wow!

Seriously. Wow. "The Walking Dead Volume 5" is so very intense, and much more violent than any issue before it.

There are times when bad things happen to people. This is that volume. I have read "extreme horror" novels that have affected me less than this comic book. The torture/rape scenes and the survivor's watchful waiting, are difficult to read. My heart is still racing. It is truly awful.

WARNING: If you are faint of heart, stop at Volume 4, while everything is going well for the survivors in their abandoned prison.

As for me, I am going to have to see this series through to the bitter end. For better or worse, I am invested in these characters. I blame the great writing, and the amazingly visceral illustrations. The author and artist evoke sympathy for every character. Even though I may not like them, I can empathize with them all.

    Walks right onto your bookshelf

This is a great way to catch up if you're not reading this as an ongoing comic each month or have missed out completely. What are you waiting for?
This may be the best monthly comic published right now, and streets ahead of amy other Zombie books.
Other Zombie comics live in fear of "Walking Dead."

    Be Warned:
This is definitely not for everyone.
It's hard to overstate how intense and challenging this series is.
It's very strong stuff and not for the faint hearted.
Even the jaded will have to admit that this is a harrowing read.

Strayed A Bit, but still very good.

Volume 5 (comic books 25-30) strayed a bit for me. We¿re introduced to a new bad guy, and it just seems like a character we¿ve seen before ¿ the cruel governor of the hopeless town that rules with an iron fist. The man in white in Godfather 2, Gene Hackman¿s character in The Quick and the Dead, every bad guy in every Zorro movie¿ And some of the characters seem¿ off. Not reacting in ways those characters should be. Rick Grimes wife, the young guy who goes on the search mission with Grimes¿ off. Not the best of the bunch, but still a part of the best thing to happen to the zombie genre in 20 years.

    Another bloody success!

Having watched the television series before reading this volume I had some ideas as to what would happen. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. The Governor is an even more evil character than his AMC counterpart. The brutality here is taken to another level as its usual reserved for the undead. Not so much here. Kirkman also does an amazing job of showing how certain kinds of people would begin to react to a world that will never be the same as they were used to. It very good stuff. The art by Charlie Adlard is, as usual, perfect for the book but not overly spectacular. His best work are the scenes in which the most violence takes place. Overall, a very good book.
