Overview

“Books alter men, and men, in their turn, alter worlds.”

Soter is a man who has been haunted by World War I. But when he’s sent to investigate the disappearance of Lionel Maudling, the owner of a grand country house whose heir may be accused for his death, he encounters a home that will lead him to nightmares he could have never imagined.

Maudling’s estate houses countless books of every sort—histories, dramas, scientific treatises. But none seems to offer Soter any hint to Maudling’s whereabouts, until he’s led to an arcane London bookseller where the reclusive scholar made his last purchase. What Soter finds at the end of a twisted maze of clues is a book like no other, with a legacy that will put everything he knows in danger…

An inventive horror novella from internationally bestselling author John Connolly, this is a story of madness, of obsession, and of books’ power to change the world.

Flower's Capture Chapter Nine by Violet

Marigold sighed. She knew that she had powers. Nobody else knew, but she knew. And now
Fern and
Violet would know. But it was a risk she needed to take to attempt to free herself. And
Fern. And
Violet. She reminded herself. "Okay," she thought and her chains burdt into flames. Fern was still out cold, but
Violet looked at her with alarm. Marigold looked at her in a way that said that she would get an explanation later. Violet still seemed puzzled by the sudden inferno when it froze. And then the icy fire defrosted, cracking open
Marigold's chains. Marigold stood and administered the same process to her ankle shackles then continued to
Violet's wrist and ankle shackles. She was just moving to
Fern when the door burst open. The woman stepped in followed by five- Five?!- guards. Two seized
Violet's arms and another delivered a liquid down her throat. Violet immediately fell limp. The men, which from left to right, the first names, whether male or female, that popped into her head, Billy, Sarah, Joe, Bob, and Annie, advanced on her. She was picked up and rope was snaked around her legs. She couldn't move her legs, and another rope was snaked around her wrists and arms. A cloth gag covered her mouth and she was blindfolded. One of the men muttered some iltelligible words and a portal opened up. She was tossed through, followed by each of the five men. When her blindfold came off, the same two men who had so roughly handled
Violet grabbed her. The ropes were taken off of her wrists and legs and she was plopped into a sort of foot mold. When her feet were in there securely, it filled up and solidified. Her hands were placed in a sort of iron compartment that only had two openings for her arms. The gag was ripped off, but
Mari saw no point to it anyways. A metal thing was wrapped around her mouth, but she couldn't have spoken anyway. And then, she found she could speak! But then the lights darkened and
Mari decided to sleep in her upright position.
