Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP(Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: As stated in its title, this is a concise review of how to survive a PGY-1. The third edition includes more up-to-date thinking and is a welcome upgrade. This guide is complimentary to the other books in the Washington Manual series.
Purpose: It is intended to point out "what not to miss" and to serve as reference to develop an approach to critical thinking, which it does well. Of particular value is the pocket-sized card of procedural skills and the "what not to miss" element.
Audience: It does have a limited audience, i.e. those entering their PGY-1 year, although it has great value for medical students in clinical clerkships to give them an excellent background and practical knowledge of what will be expected of them in the future.
Features: This is a hands-on practical book that appropriately includes "Accumulating Your War Chest" reference material, what to have in your pocket versus your locker versus your laptop. There are innumerable tips on how to work with others, what to expect from coworkers and what they will expect from you, how to handle the common, distracting calls and how to minimize their impact on your time management.
Assessment: This is a great book that I wish I had available (too many years ago). But it is here now and every PGY-1 resident should invest in it.
