Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This is the latest in a long line of manuals produced by the Department of Medicine of the Washington University School of Medicine. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The Washington Manual has served for generations as a concise reference for residents in training and, as such, continues the extraordinary tradition of being the pocket reference of choice. As the complexity of inpatient and outpatient medicine continues to increase exponentially, the internal medicine chief residents have kept the pace with this update.
Audience: The manual has been developed by and for housestaff, but it serves a much larger population, with many attendings referring to it on a daily basis.
Features: The book is divided into sections of topics rather than using a more traditional organ system approach. Examples of topics include preventive cardiology, heart failure and cardiomyopathy, pericardial and valvular heart disease, etc., making finding an area of interest very easy. The information is presented in a bullet format for faster recognition. Each topic outlines general principles, definitions, any pertinent classification system, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatments. There are many tables and figures that are very intuitive. Purchase of the book includes web access to Inkling where an interactive full-text version is available with many options, such as saving content for later reference and highlighting text.
Assessment: The Washington Manual has been one of the pillars of a house officer's life, and the tradition continues with this edition with improvements such as the web-based version.
