Overview

This highly anticipated third release from singer-songwriter Jennifer Knapp finds the artist returning to her folkie roots. Whereas the Grammy-nominated Lay It Down made liberal use of electric guitars and rock 'n' roll intensity, The Way I Amis more smoothly melodic. That's not to say this release lacks passion: The Way I Amfinds Knapp in a characteristically pensive mood, wrestling with such issues as the search for grace amid our human failings. Yes, it's heavy stuff -- and from Knapp, we expect no less -- but as always her songs are beautifully crafted and deftly performed. Working with a daunting supporting cast led by producer Tony McAnany, whose credits include Missy Elliott and Point of Grace, Knapp moves effortlessly among the project's many moods, from the lush orchestrations of "Breathe on Me" to the more aggressive title track to the loose, live feel of "Around Me." It's difficult to imagine that a talent as strong as Knapp could get even better, and yet The Way I Am shows us an artist continuing to develop as a writer and performer. Suffice it to say, it's easy to love Jennifer Knapp just the way she is.

All Music Guide - Ashleigh Kittle
On her 2001 Gotee Records release, The Way I Am, Kansas-born artist Jennifer Knapp offers acoustic rock and folk styles. She interlaces this with insightful and poetic lyrics that convey a depth of emotions captured in a personal, yet universal manner. With this album, as with her previous two projects, Knapp goes beyond being a singer and songwriter. She is a storyteller, inviting listeners to sit down beside her. The invitation is not one of student and teacher, but of fellow weary-worn traveler resting tenderly in the arms of the Father. Her songs speak of desiring to know God at a deeper level and seeking peace in the hectic schedules of life. The lyrics alone, in songs such as "Say Won't You Say" and "No Regrets," are enough to stir the soul, and they gain an even greater ability to touch when paired with the musical backdrop. Musically, The Way I Am is Knapp's best. The intricate and detailed music is carefully crafted to include layers of depth, all framed in a style of acoustic rock and folk. The album features the talents of the London Symphony Orchestra, producer Tony McAnany, and musicians Vinnie Cauliuta, Tony Levin, and Nick Moroch. In the end, with this release Knapp has yet to disappoint. She only serves to build and further shape the gift and talent demonstrated on her debut release, Kansas.

I love this cd. I think it's even better than 'lay it down', even though I also like that one. She's got the best voice. I'd reccommend it 100% to ANYBODY.

I was looking forward to getting this CD, but once I did I did not enjoy it nearly as much as Lay It Down. I enjoyed Lay It Down because she mostly used simple accompaniment to her singing, in The Way I Am she used to much other stuff that took away from her beautiful voice and guitar. The other stuff made it sound more like an 80's pop album. Stick with Lay It Down.

Jennifer Knapp's newest release, entitled ''The Way I Am'' is by far her most successful album yet. Her musical stylings, consisting of primarily folk and acoustic guitar, are still in majority in the album. The best part about JK's latest is that it is still like her other albums. She hasn't changed her style, and will continue to be successful if she keeps it up. The best tracks include the title-track ''The Way I Am,'' ''Come To Me,'' ''Charity,'' and Breathe On Me,'' though I know everyone who purchases the album will find every track enjoyable. I have no hesitation in giving a 5-star rating!
