All Music Guide - Andy Kellman
When Raphael Saadiq, along with his partners in Tony! Toni! Toné!, wrote and recorded songs like "It Never Rains in Southern California" and "Whatever You Want," he earned himself a lifetime "Do Whatever You Want" card. One could disregard his third solo studio album for being the equivalent of a Civil War reenactment, sounding much more like "instant vintage" R&B than 2002's Instant Vintage. If you want to listen to some '60s and early-'70s soul, play some soul that came out in the '60s and early '70s, right? When Raphael Saadiq, along with his partners in Tony! Toni! Save for an intrusive Jay-Z appearance on a bonus version of "Oh Girl," however, this time warp never loosens its grip, unless you cannot help but position the protagonist in "Big Easy" -- where Saadiq nails a classic tactic exemplified by the likes of Holland-Dozier-Holland, matching bliss-inducing music with saddening lyrics -- squarely within 2005 New Orleans. ("They say them levees broke, and my baby's gone.") Saadiq, with the occasional assist, wrote each song, and they're all graced with the songwriting, arranging, and production touches of the recordings the man evidently cherishes and knows inside out. Here's where a modern master, backed by living and breathing session musicians (including Funk Brother Jack Ashford), masters the masters with startling accuracy.
Vibe
The Way I See It is stocked with short, romantic cuts like "Just One Kiss," featuring Joss Stone and "Oh Girl." The vulnerable lyrics and layered vocal arrangements mirror songs that once incited crowds to do the twist and slow-drag on the dance floor.

Outstanding CD - a pure pleasure to listen to!

What every lover of Soul has been longing for - new material with the "heart of soul". Such a great tribute to the music of Motown and Philly. The sound and production is so authentic, you will think this is truly from the 60s and was just found lost in some archive somewhere. This CD has it all - great songs, performance, recording and production. You can listen to this CD all day long. Great job Raphael!

    Great R&B!

At first you are wondering what era you're listening to and then you are thrust into the present with past R&B and think you've died and gone to heaven. This is by far one of the best CDs I've listened to in a long time. If you are a true lover of R&B this should meet your listening criteria.

    I Also Recommend:

    Hit CD

I purchase all of my CD's from Barnes & Noble. Even with my membership, they cost a bit more than at another retailer, but I get what I want. (the "other" retailer is always out of popular CD's and never knows when or if they will get them in again; and you cannot order). If the CD is not in stock at B & N, they order it for me and it is received in a timely manner. For this reason I do not mind spending an extra buck for the CD. I luv Jazz and they have a really good selection. The quality of the CD's is always good. The service is greatly appreciated.

    "The Way I HEAR It"

Raphael Saadiq is too cool for school! You can hear his love of soul music running through his tracks on "The Way I See It". Great grooves, fabulous harmonies, his rhythmic tempos, and great riffs get into your bones.. you can't stop moving while listening. I purchased 3 copies to give to my friends, share the joy I always say. He is keeping Motown, a true American art form, alive for the next generation. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for a night of sheer smiles!
