Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This is a fine old-fashioned picture story, still the stock-in-trade of top magazines in the early '60s but seldom seen today. It depicts in well-chosen words and pictures the character and feelings of America in the pivotal year of an era that saw the first contemporary stirrings of black and feminist liberation, of space exploration and our Vietnam involvement, which ended dramatically and definitively with the assassination of President Kennedy on November 22. To those who experienced that day, the recollection made vivid here is searing, and the changes that came about in American society since then startling. In an excellent synthesis, PBS-TV news co-anchor MacNeil brings together period photographs, illustrations and quotes from participants to recreate a bygone America of advertisements extolling cigarettes, of submissive women and sexually circumspect movies, of a tame and ``proper'' tone in pop music and fashionable attireall with a strong, now-vanished sense of hopeful participation in the nation's, and the world's, affairs. 125,000 first printing; BOMC, QPBC and History Book Club selections. (Nov.)
Library Journal
With the ambition ``to re-create the context that made Kennedy's death so unbelievable,'' public television's MacNeil has assembled over 400 photographs from the year 1963, arranged by month and hung with dozens of capsule interviews of persons well known and unknown. Part newsreel, part Kennedy family album, part pop culture scrapbook, MacNeil's collage concludes with a documentary of the assassination and its denouement. The affecting final chapter neither elevates nor transcends the preceding miscellany; the book's parts simply don't unite. A browseable, optional choice for public libraries. BOMC, Quality Paperback Book Club, and History Book Club selections. Robert F. Nardini, M.L.S., N. Chichester, N.H.

    Posted June 18, 2003

    November 22, 1963 IS A 9/11

It's 8:30 a.m., September 11. The day Kennedy was assassinated was the most shocking moment in America until the moment CNN anchor Carol Lin said over a picture of the World Trade Center Tower with a huge smoking gaping hole in it and the graphic at the bottom of the screen: 'BREAKING NEWS WORLD TRADE CENTER DISASTER, CNN LIVE, 8:49a ET:' 'This just in. You're looking at obviously a very disturbing live shot there, that is the World Center and we have unconfirmed reports this morning that a plane has crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. CNN Center right now is just beginning to work on this story, obviously calling our sources and trying to figure out exactly what happened, but clearly something devastating this morning happening down there on the south end of the island of Manhattan. That is once again a picture of one of the towers of the World Trade Center.' I think this is a good book to read, especially for the children, understanding that the most shocking day in America since the assassination of President Kennedy WAS THE DEADLIEST DAY IN AMERICA AND TELEVISION'S DEADLIEST DAY as America witnessed terror attacks never seen before-audacious, devastating, deliberate, and deadly-a calamity witnessed live on television. I think it is important to read this book, especially with the events of September 11, 2001, understanding what the nation and world felt after Kennedy was assassinated and that the only other time the world reacted with tremendous shock was after the terrorist attacks on the United States. For parents, they remember where they were and what they were doing when President Kennedy was assassinated, for their children, it will be with the terrorist attacks on the United States.
