Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
By one estimate, there are more than 500 billion web pages now. And by every estimate, most of those pages are junk. How do you find the best of the best? Search engines will get you only so far. To get the rest of the way, check out The Web’s Greatest Hits.

This book wasn’t created by algorithms but by one thoughtful and witty human being. Lynie Arden set out to find the world’s best sites in 500 categories, from arts to zoos, adventure to ZIP codes. She’s come up with 1,800 sites that fit the bill by delivering superior content, organization, usability, and features.

What would be cool to find right about now? The nearest Native American powwow? A history of nerds dating back to 3000 B.C.? The Swahili word for “thank you”? The best bar in Zurich, Switzerland? Zillions of new Windows wallpapers? They’re all here.

Got a problem to solve? Arden’s almost certainly found a site with your solution. Freebie study guides for the world’s great literature. College scholarship databases. Safety profiles of your next new car. Foreign-language dictionaries. Marketing tools. Retirement planners and exchange-rate calculators.

Speaking of money, if by some incredible longshot, you’ve got money unclaimed in some bank account somewhere, Arden’s found a site that’ll help you recover it. Consider that laughable? How about a site to help you master the art of improv comedy?

We found one or two clunkers, but nearly every site we checked out was a winner -- and you sure won’t find most of these on your own. Bill Camarda

    My 2nd Bible

Next to Janet Evanovich, Lynie Arden is my favorite author. What a great help to those of us who flub around searching the net. It's even fun to just read!!

    Lots of great websites

What a guide like this needs to do is point out great websites we don't already know about. We all know Google and eBay, but what about places like Seeing-Stars.com (if you're visiting Hollywood to see stars) or Tipping.org (if you're wondering how much to tip that valet parking attendant). This guide lists those and hundreds more, in a relatively compact book about the size of your average almanac. A handy reference.

Searching is one thing, knowing is another

Within five minutes you'll want to save a spot on the shelf for this book near your computer. It's that handy. Browsing the table of contents even makes you happy. For someone like me who's on the low end of the web-savy spectrum, The Web's Greatest Hits 2004 makes that gap a lot smaller in a heartbeat. A great resource for someone who's fond of the question, 'Why?' as it pertains to just about anything.

    An excellent reference

I find this book very helpful. It has loads of up to date, quality web site listings. The categories are well indexed and easy to find. And, whereas some books will just list the web site, this book also has an introductory paragraph for each category that gives some background information and surfing help. In essence, this book not only gives me loads of links, it also teaches me how to become an efficient, expert web surfer.

User Friendly Guide to the Internet

Breezy and personable, Lynie Arden makes trolling the internet accessible even to relative newcomers, like me. I read some of the sites, and said I did not know that, like having the ability to fax through e-mail! At these prices you can't afford not to buy it! Perfect stocking stuffer!

    This book really helps!

This book is great! I was looking to buy a used car, and this book pointed me to lots of great sites. I actually found a car through the Internet, and checked through carfax.com to make sure it wasn't a lemon. I'm going to use this book all the time :)
