Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This hefty book contains 52 weeks of activities to help preschool teachers solve the challenge of planning learning experiences. Each week's activities include an opening activity, curriculum vocabulary, extension activities, learning center ideas and a list of related literature. Most materials needed are found objects or reasonably priced ones, and the variety of activities is a fresh approach from the usual holiday/seasonal ones. The author stresses that themes should be used according to the children's interests, not consecutively as listed. The activities provide a variety of experiences using all developmental areas, however, it would have been useful for beginning teachers to have those developmental areas or the purpose for the experience stated. This would have provided impetus for teachers to casually assess how individual children were performing in particular areas. Variety is important but teachers should know why they are providing experiences, not just keeping children entertained. The majority of activities are teacher directed, but some could be adapted to provide more child-directed experiences. The book is a useful addition to the repertoire of the preschool teacher. 2003, Gryphon House, Ages adult professional.
— Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
