School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-- These small books are overflowing with spooky props and gags: skeletons, ghouls, mummies, zombies, and other unsavory characters that hover over young thrill seekers as they make their way through haunted territory. Pedestrian verse prompts them to turn the page for yet another scare; each book ends with a particularly grotesque oversized pop-up. In The Horrors of Howling Hall , the girl slowly turns into a giant-size ghoul before readers' eyes and gives her unsuspecting friend quite a shock. Watercolor and pastel art is loosely painted, dark, and full of ``horrifying'' details that children will pore over with glee. Sure to be popular, these books are not for circulating collections; buy them for special storytimes, or for displays. --Linda Wicher, Highland Park Public Library, IL
