Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
When Karl, the werewolf, tries out for the baseball team he can't catch, can't hit, and trips over his own feet. It's not exactly the way to make the baseball team. Unfortunately, he doesn't want his dad to find out he didn't make it. The saving grace is that he is not alone. He discovers a mummy, a vampire, a zombie, a bigfoot and others who failed to make their teams, too. So a plan is devised for the "losers" to form their own team. Their unconventional playing style goes right along with their differences and adds to the fun. They are assisted by a two-headed coach who helps the kids show that they are winners, too, in this book from the "Scream Team" series. This humorous book will tickle the funny bone of even adults, because of the unusual creatures who are featured as main characters. Concepts of "heads rolling" (literally), "blobs quivering like jellyfish," and playing catch with a puss bag are included. Black and white illustrations capture the flavor of the unusual creatures and enhance the story. This book features the characters mentioned without being scary. The book contains large print, short chapters, and vocabulary that puts it at a 2.3 reading level for readers ready for chapter books. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
