The West Coast East Side Sound, Vol. 2

All Music Guide - Bruce Eder
If anything, this CD is an improvement over the initial volume in the series, although it shares similar flaws. The emphasis here is almost completely on dance numbers, with no novelty tracks intruding, and it's all to the credit of bands like the Blendells "La La La La La", the Romancers "Take My Heart", the Premiers "Get Your Baby", and the Mixtures "Rainbow Stomp" that their stuff holds up magnificently today. What's more, the mastering is so good that one really gets to appreciate the playing as well as the songs. And even the one odd track, "Hector" by the Village Callers, fits in perfectly on a stylistic level with everything else, although it's about four years newer ...

And even the one odd track, "Hector" by the Village Callers, fits in perfectly on a stylistic level with everything else, although it's about four years newer than most everything else here. Being slow romantic numbers in these surroundings, the ballads "Karen" by Little Ray & the Mixtures, "My Heart Cries" by the Romancers, and "Girl of My Dreams" by the Majestics have the hardest time fitting in, and 1962's "Destiny" by Larry Tamblyn has him sounding a little too much like Frankie Avalon, but these songs only change the mood without breaking it. The notes are a little fragmentary and, as with this entire series, one must read the insert booklets of all four volumes to get a decent picture of Eddie Davis and his record labels.
