The Westbound Sound of Detroit: Sensational Motor City Groups 1969-1975

All Music Guide - Andrew Hamilton
Lovers of vocal groups, R&B, and soul -- make it your business to seek this sucker out. Loaded onto this bombastic CD are 25 tracks of great, underpromoted music from some of the thousands of fame-seeking male vocal groups that popped up in Detroit like dandelions. The exuberant sounds of Unique Blend occupy tracks one through five; UB's songs are good, top-shelf stuff, and their spirited vocals even better -- check out "Mommy & Daddy" and "Old Fashion Woman." The Superlatives' "Don't Walk Away" is among the gems; Carl Carlton covered this midtempo stepper on Duke Records -- his is cool, but this is the one. The Detroit Emeralds and the Fantastic Four are the only really known groups on board. Both are well represented with five songs between them. The FF's "I'm Falling in Love" and DEs' "That's All I Got" are clear highlights. Five sides are by the Magictones, who went on to become a second generation of the Undisputed Truth. The two standouts are by two totally unknown groups: the Houston Outlaws and the Mighty Elegants. "I'm Finding Myself Falling In Love With You" is a sweet falsetto-led ballad that grows on you with every play; the Houston Outlaws' "What Am I Gonna Do" is also a falsetto-led ballad that will have you standing in front of the mirror lip-synching.
