Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this riff on a popular children's song, The Wheels on the School Bus by Mary-Alice Moore, illus. by Laura Huliska-Beith, not only the students ride the yellow bus, but also the teachers ("the teachers on the bus say,/ `Think, think, think!/ Learn, learn, learn!/ Think, think, think!' "), librarian and nurse. The artist's glee emanates from a spread of lunch ladies dishing out green glop to the riders. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature - Ilene S. Goldman
This is a delightful take on the classic children's song The Wheels on the Bus. In Mary-Alice Moore's version the bus is a big yellow school bus populated by teachers who lead the festivities. "The coach on the bus says, Catch, catch, catch! Throw, throw, throw, throw! The coach on the bus says, Throw, throw, throw! All the way to school." The teacher's antics are hilariously illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith, illustrator of the favorite Aunt Lucy Went to Buy a Hat. Readers are invited to join in the fun (as if they could resist) with a page of sheet music at the end which collects Moore's frolicking new lyrics all on one page. This is definitely a fun way to kick off the school year.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-An energetic adaptation of a traditional song. Bright cartoons with collage details capture various students and staff as they travel on the school bus. The usual suspects are here, from children, teachers, and the librarian to the nurse and a female coach. On the final spread, the driver switches hats to become the principal and welcomes the excited crowd to his school. The lyrics are clever and, for the most part, fit the melody well. The librarian urges the students to "Read, read, read!...Read more books!" and the custodian says, "Mop, mop mop! Sweep, sweep, sweep!...Clean this mess!" The "lunch ladies" verse crams a few too many syllables into each line, but the extra effort is repaid in the illustration-two lunch ladies (one cuddly, one intimidating) serve up spaghetti, hamburgers, and bowls of green goo, while the librarian holds up a book with a "recipe for glop." Lyrics and music are included on the last page. This book is a surefire winner, combining a wildly popular song with the enduring appeal of the school bus, and bringing it all to life with madcap pictures.-Suzanne Myers Harold, Multnomah County Library System, Portland, OR Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    A fun sing-along book

Our toddler is almost two and thoroughly enjoys having this book read to her morning, noon and night. Her only complaint is that there isn't a yellow school bus to be seen on every page (sometimes the scene on the page is inside the bus - so there's no "yellow bus" to actually see). At present we just skip to the next place in the book a bus can be seen. I'm sure in time she'll love all the pages. This is a great book for singing along to and has quickly become a firm favorite.
