Overview

After making his mark in jazz with the Chicago-based Southport Records, producer/jazz pianist Bradley Parker-Sparrow entered the pop-rock field when he started Southport's sister label, Northport, in the mid-1990s. Sparrow had the right idea -- instead of trying to compete with the majors and searching for the next Celine Dion, he would concentrate on singing unknown alternative rock acts. And given how healthy Chicago's alternative rock scene was at the time (the city had given us everyone from Ministry and Veruca Salt to Liz Phair), Sparrow didn't have a bad location. In 1995, Northport put out this little-known CD by the Whippoorwills, who came across as an unfocused garage band that hadn't gotten it all together but still had a bit of potential. Most of the material (generally pop-rock and jangly guitar-pop with a punk edge) isn't very memorable, but the disc's better songs (including "I'll Be 'Round" and the slightly Beatlesque "Happy Suicide") made us want to see how the Chicago-based band would develop.
