Overview

A spirited woman and a Highland laird learn that attraction is the most intoxicating drink of all in the second novel in the Rake Patrol series.

Lady of temperance, laird of temptation...

Claire Starke has no illusions about her future. As her father repeatedly reminded her, her looks would never win a husband, and her poverty makes her an even less suitable wife. Luckily, her comrades at the Rake Patrol have given her joy and comfort—enough to quell the dull ache for a family of her own. So, when fellow member Faith runs off to the Highlands, investigating a whisky distiller advertising for an English wife, Claire sees no choice but to save her friend from this intemperate and lustful man. But she didn’t expect the laird to be so intriguing, or to begin questioning her own restraint…

Still reeling from the distillery accident which left him scarred and shaken, Cameron MacPherson has no plans to marry, even if his mother is determined to tie him to one of the British milquetoasts parading through his castle. But when Claire bursts upon the scene, hurling accusations about alcohol and ruin, he finds the reformer fascinating. The fact that she stands up to him when others shrink away is more than charming—this one has spirit and, to be honest, he wouldn’t mind drinking a deep draught of her…

It is little wonder that growing up with an abusive, alcoholic father leads Claire Starke to champion the temperance movement. In fact, Claire is on her way to the coveted prize of introducing Carrie Nation at the rally. Her plans are soon sidelined, though, when she hares off to Scotland to rescue her friend from Cameron MacPherson, the "Whisky Laird." VERDICT The beauty of Scotland comes alive in the words of MacMeans. The developing friendship between our protagonists holds the perfect blend of steam and romance to please the most discriminating readers. This is book 2 in the Rake Patrol series. Claire Starke is off to Scotland to make sure that her fellow Rake Patroller is not sold off into white slavery! What she finds when she arrives is a laird that owns a whisky distillery, which is not that much better... Cameron MacPherson is tired of his mother inviting English woman to his home is hopes of him finding a wife. This latest group takes the cake as it includes a woman reformer spouting the ills of drinking. What happens when this unlikely duo finds themselves attracted to each other? I really enjoyed this story. We see a little bit of Claire in the first story in the series and know that she is a bit radical. She definitely makes an impression when she first arrives in Scotland. Both Claire and Cameron have some healing of past hurts to get over and I think that allowed them to connect with each other on a different level than their attraction for each other did. I loved that the author included photography in the book. As an avid photographer myself, it was neat to read about the early use of cameras. I'm really excited to continue to read this series and hope the with each one we revisit each of the members of the Rake Patrol! Thanks go out to Penguin Group via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

Oh what a wonderful story! Claire is one of my favorite characters. She is written so well, and completely opens up and comes to life in this book. You see her many layers and the changes she goes through while in Scotland. I found myself cheering for her in the book, almost immediately. I wanted to see if her opinion of alcohol was going to change. I couldn't put it down. With all the humor, the interesting interactions, and the subtle revelations, I didn't want to walk away from the story. I really liked how I would think I had something figured out, but with just a few words, the truth was revealed, and it turns out I was completely wrong. Things are not always as they seem in this book, and I love that! I loved the witty banner between the characters, and it is done so well in this book. Plus all the emotion! This book has a lot of it, and it is amazing as well. I have not read the first book in the Rake Patrol series, but I most certainly will after I enjoyed this one so much. It was a fantastic read, and you can tell it was very well-researched!
