PreS-Gr 3-While this is a book/tape combination, the book is almost completely extraneous. Indeed, it will fall gently closed in the lap of listeners as they become swept up in the audio version. Emma Thompson creates voices for each character and reads the story by Eric Metaxas (S&S, 2000) with heart and expression. The story is so well-written that it needs no adornment, but Thompson's voice weaves the tapestry of the tale around Joe Jackson's charming music, wrapping listeners in its intricate and colorful folds. To determine who will inherit the kingdom, a king sets three tasks for his sons. The third son finds himself in a magical kingdom where he falls in love with the beautiful white cat that helps him in his quest. In the end, his love breaks the spell and all live happily ever after. This elegantly-crafted version of the French fairy tale will delight listeners, and Thompson's narration suits the story perfectly.-Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
